A compass, and a child who couldn’t let it go.
Where the name comes from, and what it commits us to.

When Albert Einstein was four or five years old, his father showed him a compass.
The needle swung and settled, and nothing had touched it. There was no string, no push, nothing visible doing anything at all. He remembered it for the rest of his life. Recalling it as an old man, he wrote that the experience made a deep and lasting impression — that something deeply hidden had to be behind things.
He was a small child. He had no mathematics, no vocabulary, no theory. What he had was the specific feeling that the world was not telling him everything, and that the missing part could be found.
That feeling is the entire product. Everything else here — the lessons, the experiments, the schema, the review process — exists to give a child that experience on purpose, about a dozen different things, in a single year.
What the name commits us to
A name like this could easily become decoration. We’ve tried to make it load-bearing instead. Three things follow from it directly:
- Hidden means hidden, not mystical. The things behind things are findable. Every lesson ends on a real open question, and several of them end on a question somebody actually answered — with a measurement, on a specific date, that we name.
- The child is the one looking. Einstein wasn’t taught the compass. He was handed it. Our lessons ask for a prediction before they give an explanation, and the explanation is structurally unable to appear until the prediction exists.
- We say when we’re at the edge. The last lesson of the first Big Idea leaves an eight-year-old at a real unfinished question: gravity and the rules for tiny things don’t yet fit together. Not “it’s complicated.” The map runs out, and the next layer is still waiting. That’s the most exciting sentence in the module.
Who this is for
- Children, roughly 8 to 11 — third through fifth grade. Not the child who is already a physics prodigy. The ordinary curious one, and honestly, the one who has decided science is a subject where you memorise things.
- Parents who want to sit down and learn it too. You do not need the science in advance. The parent guide is written on that assumption: a script, the timing, and the questions they will ask, so you can marvel at the same table.
- Teachers looking past the current curriculum. It is a supplement, not a replacement — thirty minutes, inspiration rather than another unit to cover. It maps to the standards and then goes deliberately further, into the questions a classroom rarely has room for.
