Why bother, when school already teaches science
School science in these years is mostly description — name the parts, label the diagram, learn that gravity pulls things down. It is not wrong, and it is not enough. It rarely gives a child the experience of being surprised by the world and then understanding why, which is the experience that makes someone want more.
We also think some familiar pictures stop too soon. “Heavy things fall faster” is usually corrected. “Gravity is a force that pulls” usually isn’t — and a later physics course has to grow that picture rather than throw it away. We’d rather grow it from the start.
What makes it careful
- Every claim carries a status. Well established, useful model, superseded, or open question — and the child is told which. A nine-year-old can hold the difference between “we measured this to a part in a thousand trillion” and “this question is still open.”
- Every lesson names its sources. They’re printed at the bottom of the guide. If we say a satellite measured something in 2022, you can go and read the paper.
- Lessons are reviewed by scientists before publication, and the review is recorded against the lesson. Nothing ships with that field empty.
- We publish our revisions. When a lesson changes, the guide says what changed and why.
Safety and privacy, in plain terms
Children never have accounts
You have the account. A learner is a nickname and a picture attached to it. No child email, no password, no birthdate, no photograph, and nothing your child types in free text — because they never type free text. Every answer is a choice among options.
Nothing third-party in the child’s part of the site
No analytics, no advertising pixels, no embedded video from anywhere else, no fonts loaded from another company’s server. Not “minimal tracking” — none. Pages written for adults record page views with Umami so we can see how the site is used. That does not load in the child’s lessons.
No dark patterns, anywhere a child can see
No streaks to break, no countdowns, no comparisons to other children, no upsell where a child could reach it. Several states now require this. We’d have done it anyway.
You can take it all back
See exactly what’s stored for each child, export it, or delete it. Deletion is real deletion, on a schedule, including the activity records. Cancelling is not deletion — if you come back in September, your family’s progress is still here.
The honest limits
- It’s thirty minutes a week. It will not replace a science curriculum and isn’t trying to.
- The first lesson of each Big Idea really wants an adult. Later ones are fine alone.
- Some of it is hard. Lesson 2 of the first Big Idea teaches an eight-year-old that time runs at different speeds. Some children will need it twice. That’s allowed, and the guide says so.
- We are new. Gravity & Relativity is playable. The rest of the year is mapped. Accounts and checkout are being built; they are not live.
